Shopify transaction fees in India: a Rs 1,000 order broken down

Shopify transaction fees in India come in two layers. The first is Shopify's own third-party payment provider fee, which is 2% of each order on Basic, 1% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced and 0.2% on Plus. The second is your payment provider's own charge, which is separate, for example Razorpay at 2% per successful transaction plus 18% GST on that fee.

Shopify Payments is not available in India, and India is not on Shopify's supported-countries list, so an Indian store runs on a third-party payment provider. On a Rs 1,000 order on the Basic plan that adds up to Rs 43.60 in fees: Rs 20 from Shopify, Rs 20 from Razorpay and Rs 3.60 of GST on Razorpay's fee.

This guide walks through each layer, what the subscription costs on top, and how to work out the real fee load for your own order values. Plan prices below are Shopify's India pricing as published for October 2026, so check the pricing page before you commit.

What does a Shopify transaction fee in India actually cover?

When an Indian seller searches for Shopify transaction fees, the confusing part is that the phrase covers two different charges pulled from two different companies. Shopify's transaction fee is the third-party payment provider fee, which Shopify deducts because it is not the company processing the payment for you. Your payment provider is the company that actually moves the money.

So the effective cost of a Shopify transaction in India is Shopify's percentage plus the provider's percentage plus the GST that the provider charges on its own fee. The subscription plan price sits on top of all of that, charged monthly whether or not you took an order that day.

This is why a store that does Rs 50,000 of monthly sales should not look only at the plan price. The percentage fees scale with every order, and they are the part that quietly grows as you get busier.

How much do Shopify plans cost for stores in India?

Shopify's India plan pricing, as published for October 2026, looks like this. Annual billing is cheaper than monthly billing on every plan, and Plus is a custom-scale tier.

Basic: Rs 1,499 a month billed yearly, or Rs 1,994 on monthly billing.

Grow: Rs 5,599 a month billed yearly, or Rs 7,447 on monthly billing.

Advanced: Rs 22,680 a month billed yearly, or Rs 30,164 on monthly billing.

Plus: from Rs 1,75,000 a month.

For a first-time seller in India, the practical comparison is not only Basic against Grow. You also need to look at what the transaction percentages do to your margin as order volume grows, because a lower subscription can still cost more per order once the provider fee is counted.

Why does an Indian store need a third-party payment provider?

Shopify Payments is not available in India, and India is not on Shopify's supported-countries list. That is the reason a third-party payment provider exists in the setup at all, rather than a choice you make for better rates.

The provider handles payment collection for your checkout and settles the money to your account. For an Indian store this is where UPI, card and netbanking payments get processed, so picking a provider that handles Indian payment methods well matters more than picking one with a slightly lower headline rate.

Whatever provider you choose, the 18% GST on the provider's fee is charged on the fee itself, not on your order value. For how that applies to your own registration and returns, check with your CA.

What does the payment provider charge on top of Shopify?

Razorpay's standard rate is 2% per successful transaction plus 18% GST on the fee. Those are two separate lines on your settlement report: the percentage, and the tax on that percentage.

Worked on a Rs 1,000 transaction, the provider takes Rs 20. GST at 18% on that Rs 20 is Rs 3.60. So the provider's cost on that order is Rs 23.60, and it does not change with your Shopify plan.

A useful habit for an Indian seller is to keep the two percentages on separate lines in your own costing sheet. One belongs to the platform, one belongs to the payment provider. When you compare platforms later, you will be comparing like with like.

What happens on a Rs 1,000 order on the Basic plan?

Here is the full picture for one Rs 1,000 order paid through a provider on Shopify's Basic plan in India.

Shopify's third-party payment provider fee at 2%: Rs 20.

Razorpay's fee at 2% of the successful transaction: Rs 20.

GST at 18% on Razorpay's Rs 20 fee: Rs 3.60.

Total fees on the order: Rs 43.60.

That is 4.36% of the order value in payment-related fees alone, before the Basic subscription of Rs 1,499 a month billed yearly is added. On a Rs 1,000 order the fixed subscription is the bigger number, which is why low order values and monthly plan prices deserve a proper calculation before you pick a platform.

How do the transaction fees change on Grow, Advanced and Plus?

The same Rs 1,000 order costs less in Shopify's own fee as you move up plans, because the third-party payment provider fee drops with the tier.

Basic at 2%: Rs 20 from Shopify.

Grow at 1%: Rs 10 from Shopify.

Advanced at 0.6%: Rs 6 from Shopify.

Plus at 0.2%: Rs 2 from Shopify.

The provider's charge of Rs 20 plus Rs 3.60 of GST stays the same on all four plans, because it is the provider's rate, not Shopify's. The pattern to notice is that the platform percentage gets smaller as the subscription gets larger, so the right tier depends on how many orders you take and how much each one is worth.

Frequently asked questions

Does Shopify charge transaction fees on orders from an Indian store?

Yes, but through the third-party payment provider fee rather than Shopify Payments, which is not available in India. The fee is 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced and 0.2% on Plus, charged on each order in addition to your payment provider's own fee.

Can I use Shopify Payments for a store that sells in India?

No. Shopify Payments is not available in India and India is not on Shopify's supported-countries list. Indian stores collect payments through a third-party payment provider such as Razorpay.

How do I calculate the true cost of one Shopify order in India?

Add four things: your plan subscription, Shopify's third-party payment provider fee for that plan, the payment provider's percentage, and the GST the provider charges on its own fee. On a Rs 1,000 order on Basic that is Rs 43.60 in fees, plus your share of the Rs 1,499 monthly subscription when billed yearly.

Is the 18% GST charged on my order value or on the payment fee?

On the payment provider's fee. Razorpay charges 2% per successful transaction, and 18% GST applies to that fee, so on a Rs 1,000 order the GST component is Rs 3.60. For how these charges are treated in your own books, check with your CA.

Does Shof charge transaction fees on payments?

Shof charges 0% payment platform fee, so there is no platform percentage added on top of what your gateway charges. Payment gateway charges may still apply, and subscription pricing is confirmed during the walkthrough. Shof is in early access, so join the waitlist at shof.in to see it.
